USB drives are excellent for transporting files or portable applications, but they don't offer any protection. Anyone could access your personal files if you lose such a device. Granite Portable can help you prevent such situations. The application serves more than one purpose. Besides protecting files, it also provides you with a menu for your USB drive, which makes it easier and faster to launch portable applications, access bookmarks and other items.

Granite Portable doesn't need to be installed and as the name suggests, you must run it on a USB drive. The application is free and it provides support for Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 and Win 8. It requires .NET Framework 3.5, which can be installed in no time on any computer.

When you launch Granite Portable, an icon will appear in the lower right corner of the screen. Clicking this icon will display a menu, from which you can launch applications and Windows utilities, access web bookmarks and more. You can also find a few options for installing add-ons, accessing the general settings menu and opening the vault folder on the USB drive.

Shortcuts for applications and utilities, bookmarks and the vault folder are located in the application's own folder. If you store your files in the vault folder, they will be rendered inaccessible until you launch the application, which requires a username and password. It is also possible to prevent the creation of new files in the USB drive's root, which can be useful for protecting your system or other computers from auto-run viruses.

If you wish to add new applications, shortcuts or bookmarks, you must store them in Granite Portable's sub-folders, on your USB drive. Stored applications are launched automatically when you plug in your USB device and you can also run them manually, by double clicking their names, on the application's menu. Additionally, Internet Explorer bookmarks can be imported automatically, if you right click anywhere in the application's menu and select the appropriate option.

Pros

Granite Portable provides you with a menu for your USB drives. You can launch applications, bookmarks or Windows utilities fast and easy. The application can also help you immunize your USB drives against auto-run viruses.

Cons

You may need some time to figure out how to lock the vault folder. With Granite Portable, managing a USB drive's contents can be done in a fast, comfortable and elegant fashion.
